INNOVATIVE CHURCHES
One of the saddest commentaries on the evangelical church is its deadening sameness. One can look in the yellow pages and find Sunday School, worship, Sunday evening and midweek services listed with numbing regularity. If the church is one of the 37,000 Southern Baptist churches, you can also expect to find Women’s Missionary Union, Brotherhood, Girls’ Auxiliary, Royal Ambassadors, and Training Union. If it is not Southern Baptist, look for basically the same groups with different names. When Detroit mass-produces, all the models come off the assembly line looking the same. When the Holy Spirit creates, each one is unique. Everything God creates is one of a kind. Yes, there are similarities between snowflakes and fingerprints. Yes, we should expect similarities among evangelical churches, but not the sameness which suffocates. From The Church Unleashed, by Frank R. Tillapaugh, page 73 & 74.
