CRITICAL PARENTS
Couples who severely criticize one another do more than undermine their relationship, reports Thad Ryan, a Ph.D. researching the effects of bickering husbands and wives. Harsh words harm the children, too. Kids are most likely to suffer when a husband or wife engages in hard criticism of each other, Ryan discovered. Such behavior gives children an array of social and psychological problems from anxiety and insecurity to substance abuse. His prescription: Spare the spars so you won’t spoil the child.
