ISRAELI PAST TIME: BANK ROBBERIES
Doug Struck of The Baltimore Sun reports that there have been over sixty robberies in Israel within the last seven months. He calls it “amateur hour for bank robbers in Israel.” What’s going on? Struck quotes Eric Bar-Chen, an Israeli police official as blaming the media coverage of the Israeli banks’ lack of security for the rash of amateur heists. “Everybody thinks they can do it… These aren’t very professional jobs… There was a time when bank robbers were the elite, the high-class thieves… Now, everybody… walks in with a stick-up note.” A defense attorney for some of the thieves blames the lack of security at the banks as just too much temptation for his clients. He says that banks are supposed to be secure, but “here they’re not even guarded.” We are called to a higher calling. The need for external restraints and laws should never exist.
