MONUMENT PARK
The Freedom from Religion Foundation of Madison, Wisconsin wants equal access to the religious sentiments of those who visit Lincoln Park which is just west of the Capitol Building in Denver, Colorado. The foundation originally wanted the three feet by four feet Ten Commandments monument removed. Throughout eight years of legal wrangling, the Colorado Supreme Court and the United States Supreme Court ruled that the monument could stay. The response of the Freedom from Religion Foundation is to insist that they have a monument as well that reads, “There are no gods, no devils, no angels, no heaven or hell. There is only our natural world. Religion is but myth and superstition that hardens hearts and enslaves minds.” The foundation awaits the decision of the State of Colorado’s Capitol Development Committee. State legislators wonder if they would also be required to allow pacifists equal access to war monuments. Perhaps Lincoln Park will eventually become Monument Park with every religion and philosophy represented…
