TINY LOAF OF SILVER
Long ago, there was a great famine in Germany, and those who were poor suffered severely from hunger. A rich man who had great compassion sent for twenty children and told them: “In this basket there is a loaf of bread for each of you and your family. Take a loaf and come back again every day until the famine is over. I will give you a loaf of bread everyday.” The children were famished. They ran to the basket, seized it, and struggled for the largest loaf of bread possible. They were in such a hurry they forgot to thank the gracious man. When the children had finished struggling and had taken their loafs of bread, one little girl named Gretchen remained. She walked to the basket and removed the last loaf from the basket.
