A CHEAP HOUSE
Edwin Markham tells the story in his Poem, “The Parable of the Builders,” of a rich man who desired to do good to his fellows. He came upon a poor peasant who lived with his family in a tiny hut. The rich man employed the peasant to build him a beautiful house. To save money, so his profit would be more, the peasant worker used the cheapest materials that he could find, secretly enjoying outwitting the rich man. He gave the task his poorest workmanship. When the house was completed, the rich man returned to inspect the house. “This is your house,” he said, “it is a gift for you and your family.” So the laborer, by his deception, deprived his family of a wonderful dwelling, which might have been a lasting joy, but became a source of heartache.” By William McDonald, Cathedral Community Church, Maldin, South Carolina
