PRIMITIVE
The first business concession that Armand Hammer received in Russia following his 1921 visit with Lenin, was the development of an asbestos mine near the rural town of Alapayevsk. This town was so primitive in their knowledge of modern technology that they not only didn’t have electricity, they hardly understood what it was. Hammer writes: We installed electric power and light for the whole community, which caused a sensation since none of the local people had ever seen an electric bulb before. At first, they tried to light their fires with bulbs unscrewed from their fittings and were totally mystified to get no result. Other people journeyed from hundreds of miles to see this modern miracle. Hammer, page 153.
