INTERDEPENDENCE
In the night the restless water of the lake surrendered to relentless cold, and, with autumnal overturn complete, became imprisoned in a glaze of ice — a prisoner to itself in different form. So silently did this occur that ducks, asleep, missed the change from gentle movement to crystal immobility; and, with heads beneath their wings, and none to sound alarm, were frozen in, helpless and without hope, until their plight was known to those still free. These, huddling round, responding to some primal urge, (or was it learned behavior?) defied the grip of ice, gave of their bodies’ warmth, and thawed them free.
