CHAIRS AND PRAYERS
A new associate pastor was asked by a woman in the church to visit her father in the hospital who was dying of cancer. The associate went to see her father. There was an empty chair prominently placed next to the man’s bed. During the course of conversation, the associate pastor asked the dying man why the chair was situated so closely to his bed. The man was somewhat embarrassed by the pastor’s question, but after some hesitation, he explained that it was there to help him pray. The confused pastor asked how this could help anyone with prayer. The man continued by telling the pastor that he had always struggled with prayer; he just was not very good at it. It was hard to remember that God was always there, and he was always listening. So one day he placed a chair in front of himself and pretended that Jesus was physically sitting in that chair.
