Norman V. Peale tells a beautiful story of a man who was raised in deep poverty. His mother died at a time when her son was still very young, and the father – well, he was a drunk. The kid seemingly had no chance in life. He married young, but it was rocky to say the least. The string on poverty was kept going by the fact that he, too, now drank, and he couldn’t hold down a job. Finally he reached the place where he realized that he was a hopeless failure. His wife left him, and he was broke, and in a sense of desperation he prayed — something he wasn’t used to doing — and cried out to God for help and guidance.
