I have found a number of helpful passages in Henri Nouwen’s book Gracias! It is the journal he kept while spending a six month pilgrimage in Bolivia and Peru. It is an insight into the meaning of the spiritual life in an agonized world. He spent most of the time at a language institute in Bolivia (to work on his Spanish) and with the Maryknoll fathers in Peru. Here are some samples from his thoughtful work: RECOGNIZE The first objective of the Maryknoll Society, as expressed by the General Chapter in 1979, is: “To recognize and elaborate a mission of spirituality which integrates community, prayer, a simple life-style, apostolic work, and commitment to the poor.” I like the word “recognize.” A true spirituality cannot be constructed, built, or put together; it has to be recognized in the daily life of people who search together to do God’s will in the world.
