“They look but do not see, they listen but do not hear or understand” (Matthew 13:13).
More than three hundred million people in the world speak the English language, and it seems as though at least that many more are trying to learn to speak it. But learning the vocabulary isn’t easy, and often the learner’s choice of words produces strange results. For example, in Tokyo there is a traffic sign with this advice for English-speaking motorists:
When a passenger of the foot heave in sight, tootle the horn. Trumpet him melodiously at first, but if he still obstacles your passage, then tootle him with vigor.
Even if our choice of words is exquisite, the Word of God will take root in our hearts not through what we say about it but by the way we express it in our lives. Anything less and we’re just tootling our horns. And that means a constant renewing of commitment to change radically; a constant renewing of commitment…
