EMPHASES OF SPIRITUAL LEADERSHIP
In his article, “Fit to Lead: Making Leadership Christian,” James E. Means warns against the adoption of “Madison Avenue” leadership strategies that are more manipulation than spiritual leadership. To establish spiritual leadership in the church, Means suggests the following emphases (plural of emphasis) on the part of its leadership: Character First: Focus first on character before all else. Being is more important than doing in God’s economy. Personal integrity and spiritual authenticity are powerful spiritual influences. Appeal to God’s Sovereign Control: Prayer lists and systematic prayer are powerful forces in spiritual leadership. God’s will must come before our own. Renewed Commitment to Servant Leadership: Humility and service are essential in spiritual leadership. Leadership ability is measured by the amount of humble service one is willing to render. Priority to Please God: Spiritual leadership never puts the approval from people above approval from God. Decisions that are primarily focused on winning the hearts of the people sacrifice the heart of God…
