GOLF RULE BROKEN
On June 29, 1996, defending champion Greg Norman excited the Greater Hartford Open. He reported himself for using an improperly labeled ball in the first two rounds and was disqualified . Golf officials said the ball was physically identical to the one approved with a stamp number that indicated it was not on the USGA’s list of conforming balls. Norman said it was just an oversight by Maxfi, who did not understand that the stamping has to be the identical stamping on the ball that has been approved by the USGA. Golf is known for its strict rules, but it typically takes something a bit more drastic to merit a disqualification, like hitting the wrong ball or signing an incorrect scorecard. Norman himself called the PGA officials about the problem, because he said, “You live by the rules of the game.”
