Eric Marshall and Stuart Hample have compiled a brand new collection of “Children’s Letters to God.” It could be argued that not since the publication of the last volume of letters in 1967 has there been assembled such a poignant record of children’s basic beliefs and questions about God. The following are a few examples from this new collection:

Dear God,
Is Reverend Coe a friend of yours, or do
you just know him through the business?

Dear God,
I didn’t think orange went with purple until
I saw the sunset you made on Tuesday.
That was cool.

Dear God,
It is great the way you always get the
stars in the right places.

Dear God,
Is it true my father won’t get in heaven
if he uses his bowling words in the house?

Dear God,
Did you really mean do unto others…
