WHEN ENOUGH IS ENOUGH
A certain rabbi was known for his great wisdom. One day a student asked him: “Rabbi, would you rather have fifty thousand dollars or five children?” “Five children,” answered the rabbi instantly. “But that is based on emotion, not cold reason,” protested the youth. Rabbi went on: “My preference is based on pure logic. First, human nature being what it is, if I had fifty thousand dollars, I would undoubtedly want more. As a pious man I cannot condone greed, even in myself. You will agree that this cannot possibly apply to five children. Secondly, should I desire to have fifty thousand dollars it would not happen anyway; simple desire without practical application does not produce money. So why make a fool of myself? Thirdly, young man, I would rather have five children because I actually have nine!”
