More Americans believe in Jesus Christ but a smaller percentage belong to churches than did a decade ago, says a major Gallup Poll. The nationwide poll called “The Unchurched American,” found that 84 percent of those surveyed believe in the divinity of Jesus Christ, compared with 78 percent in a 1978 Gallup Poll. 44 percent of respondents were not church members or have not attended regular services in six months, compared with 40 percent of those polled a decade ago. There was no significant change, however, in the view held by more than 75 percent of those surveyed that a person can be a good Christian or Jew even if he or she does not attend a church or synagogue. In both surveys, about 80 percent also said they believe that a person “should arrive at his or her religious beliefs independent of any church or synagogue.” From “Despite Empty Pews, Christian Believers Increase,” Wisconsin State Journal, July 16, 1988
