FIRST, THEY GAVE OF THEMSELVES
Dr. W. L. Stidger asked a young man to recount his most exciting adventure during the war. His reply was as follows: “We were in the submarine zone and knew that a wolf pack of subs was surrounding us. It was not my watch, but that morning I got up before dawn to be on the bridge, for I was fearful. We were carrying ten thousand soldiers on our ship. I had a great sense of responsibility for those American boys. Half an hour after I went up on the bridge with the Captain, the sun suddenly shot up out of the Atlantic like a great ball of fire. We were looking at it through our glasses when suddenly each of us saw the white wake of a torpedo headed straight for our ship. It was a terrorizing thing, for we could not dodge it; we had no room or time to maneuver our ship out of its path.…
