MINORITY GROUP/ETHNIC HUMOR
I have mixed feelings about finally getting admitted to a persecuted minority group. In the recent presidential campaign political pundit Mark Russell reported that Mrs. Mondale said Walter had Norwegian Charisma. Russell pointed out that this meant that Mondale’s charisma was somewhere between a Presbyterian minister and a tree! As a Presbyterian minister I am now being lumped together with such bland entities as Walter Mondale and trees. But I can’t complain (in fact I laughed uproariously upon hearing it) as I have always enjoyed ethnic humor — even when, as a kid, I often heard “Knuckle-headed Dane” jokes (my Mom was born in Aarhus, Denmark). I have lamented the demise of the ethnic joke in this hyper-sensitive world in which we live.
