MEANING OF LORD’S PRAYER
Two more: “The ‘Our Father,’ the perfect prayer, nowhere says ‘Thank you.’ Why not? Perhaps saying ‘Thank you’ is merely good manners like not eating your peas with a knife. Maybe God is less concerned about your manners than he is with that ‘forgive us as we forgive’ business. Maybe it is in forgiving that we say ‘Thank you’ his way.” And “‘Thy will be done’ is not a pleasant encouragement to God that he may succeed at whatever it is that he’s up to, or that others do his will. It is an acknowledgment of our job description, a salute and a joyful ‘Aye, aye, Sir.'” By Father Joseph S. Hogan of St. Joseph’s College, Philadelphia who died in 1961
