How can we know God? When I was twelve, I found some ads for pen pals in the back of a Boy’s Life Magazine. I thought it would be a great idea to have a pen pal, so I began to write to a girl in Boston whose name was Patricia. It wasn’t long before Pat (that was her nickname) and I became friends. As we wrote back and forth, I came to know what music she liked, and what foods she preferred, who her friends and family were, and in what part of the city we lived. She told me about the things that made her angry. I learned what made her happy, or sad, or frightened. I found out that she liked silly jokes and cartoons.
