The story is told (though not fully authenticated), that some years back Colonel Sanders went to Rome and arranged for private audience with the Pope. When he finally got him alone he said, “Look, I’d be happy to make a donation of a million dollars if I could get you to change that line ‘Give us this day our daily bread’ to ‘Give us this day our daily chicken.” The Pope is reported to have said, “Get out of here.” A year went by. The persistent Colonel went back to Rome and made another pitch, “Look, I’ll raise the donation to 50 million dollars if you’ll announce the switch to chicken from bread.” Once again the Pontiff chased him out of the Vatican.
