VIRTUAL GIRLFRIENDS
From United Press International in June of 1996: “Virtual Girlfriends” is a hit in Tokyo… The video game makes players steer a boy through high school, where he must look nice, get good grades, and especially be popular. “The game is like a dream come true, because you can ask a lot of girls out on dates,” says the manufacturer’s spokesman. “In the game you can be brave because you can’t go wrong.” If the player makes the right moves, the virtual schoolgirl will say “I love you.” Fans are cheering a promised sequel, where they can profess their love back to the machine. “The fun lies in the process of finding out what makes a girl happy,” one player said. Here’s a thought: ask a real one.
