THE COMPANION IN THE CHAIR
There was once a pastor who was called to an elderly man’s deathbed. The pastor went to sit in the armchair next to the bed, but the elderly man waved him out of the chair, commanding him not to sit there. Puzzled, the young pastor moved and sat on the side of the bed instead. After receiving Holy Communion the elderly gentleman seemed to revive a bit. “Let me tell you the story of that armchair,” he whispered in the minister’s ear. “Fifty years ago,” he continued, “when I was a boy, my old pastor asked me if I said my prayers. ‘No,’ I replied. ‘I have no one to pray to. Even if I shout at the top of my voice the people upstairs can’t hear me. So how can God, who is way up in heaven hear me?’ My old pastor smiled. ‘Do not try to pray then, he told me. ‘Just sit quietly in the morning…
