CASTING OUT COVETOUSNESS
There lived two brothers who were very poor though they loved each other greatly. One day, as they were returning home from the field, they saw to their delight two pieces of gold on the side of the road. Suddenly one of them shouted. “What a windfall! We are now rich!” Each picked up one of the pieces of the gold and continued joyously on their journey home. As they walked, neither of them spoke. Each considered their good fortune and what they could do with their new-found wealth. Their contemplation grew deeper, and their joy seemed to subside. As they crossed a bridge, the older brother threw his piece of gold into the water. The younger brother was shocked to see his brother’s unexpected behavior.
