LOOKING FOR LOOPHOLES
The United States Government decided to come out with a new nickel in 1883. There was one little oversight that would normally not have mattered at all, except for the fact that man is a sinner and is always looking for a way to get rich quick. Josh Tatum was one such man. Josh was a deaf man. He noticed that this new nickel, referred to as a “Liberty Nickel” did not have the word “cents” on it anywhere. That was the oversight. It had a large “V” on the obverse surrounded by a wreath and the words, “United States of America, E Pluribus Unum” surrounding the wreath. Josh also noticed that it was the same size and shape as the $5 gold piece in circulation, and the reverse of the coin had a similar “Liberty Head” of a woman on it surrounded by stars, just like the $5 gold piece.
