THE UNWILLING GIVER
From my vantage point on the platform during the worship service, I viewed the struggle from start to finish. At first I quietly chuckled, but then realized I was observing a more dynamic sermon than the one I would momentarily present from the pulpit. An energetic 2 year old boy seated on his mother’s lap was taking in the service. His mother placed a few coins in his hand and motioned for him to place them in the offering plate a deacon was holding out to her. Perhaps the youngster dreamed of an ice cream cone or toy the coin might buy. At any rate, his fist closed tightly on the money and his head shook from side to side. Undaunted, his mother next took his arm, forcing it out toward the offering plate, but the little fist clenched even tighter. Finally, using both hands, his mother forced open the paralyzed fingers; the coins clinked into the plate. The relieved deacon…
