A superintendent of schools had just introduced a new grading system. At a meeting

of one of the local service organizations, he was invited to explain how the new system worked. “Ladies and gentlemen,” he began, “our point of departure in this matter is the realization that with respect to examinations not all of them are marked by the standard of 100. In some cases the passing level may be established at 426 out of 900. In another case it may be 260 out of 450. You will better understand this by translating the 900 number and the 450 number to 100. This means, of course, that the numbers 426 and 260 become 50.
