“…you were called together as parts of one body” (Colossians 3:15).

For most of this century the term “melting pot” has been in use to refer to the assimilation of many cultures into American society.

Recently, someone offered a very different take on this idea. The speaker said she preferred the concept of a cultural “stew” to a cultural “soup.”

She said, “A soup is a homogeneous collection of ingredients blending into a consistent sameness. But a stew is a different story. It’s made up of individual ingredients that stand on their unique contribution to the pot – the meat and the potatoes and the vegetables each make their own statement – and together, they comprise a beautiful meal.

As members of the stew that we call the Christian community, each one of us have our unique contribution to make to the family of man. And the one ingredient that binds it all together is the Presence of Christ in our lives, and the Gospel…
