A HERITAGE OF PEACE
Shortly after the arrival of Quaker leader William Penn to Pennsylvania in 1681, he wrote a letter of peace and goodwill to the Native Americans in which he expressed his desire to enjoy this land with their “love and consent” and that they could “always live together as neighbors and friends.” His letter continues: “I have great love and regard towards you, and I desire to gain your love and friendship by a kind, just and peaceable life, and the people I send are of the same mind, and shall in all things behave themselves accordingly… I am your loving friend.”
