Rachel Carson, author of Silent Spring, reminds us of an exchange between Alice and the Red Queen.
Says Alice, “One can’t believe impossible things.”

To which the Queen responds, “I dare say, you haven’t had much practice. When I was your age, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes I believed in as many as six impossible things before I had breakfast.”

“And that,” says Rachel Carson, “is a very necessary thing to do and to know. If you start believing in impossible things before breakfast, the first thing you know, by dinner they are not impossible anymore!”
