There were times in the life of the saintly Theresa of Avila (1515-1582) when she must have felt that she was enduring more than her fair share of sickness and trouble. On one occasion, so the story goes, the carriage in which she was riding tipped over. She climbed out, fussing and fuming and complaining to God.
“Now this, on top of everything else,” she said.
“That’s how I treat my friends,” God answered.
“And that’s why you have so few of them,” she snapped back.
