GIVING, HOPE AND APPRECIATION
In Lee Iacocca Talking Straight, he shares a number of stories about raising funds for the Statue of Liberty project on the occasion of the 100th birthday of the lovely lady in New York harbor: There was the man from Poland who sent us $2 for “this beautiful symbol” that he never expected to see himself, but at least he could dream about it. And there was the money order that arrived from a refugee camp in Thailand. Seventy-eight homeless Vietnamese had passed the hat and come up with $114.19 as “our humble share for the rehabilitation of the Statue of Liberty on the occasion of her hundredth birthday.” That one floored me. These were people who had lost everything — everything but hope. And the Lady was the symbol of that hope.
