DIFFERENT DREAMS
Two young medical students at the University of Michigan had just finished their classes one day in the spring of 1883. It was a time of great hope and anticipation for them: in a few weeks they would receive their medical degrees. All the hard work, the long hours would soon be rewarded — they would be doctors. They were relaxing now in their rooms and their thoughts naturally reverted to what they would do with their lives. The two were as different in outward appearance as two men could be: the one short, stocky, the other tall, thin with blue eyes. “Come on, Will,” the short, stocky one was saying, “come to New York with me. We’ll make a great team. There are a lot of wealthy people back East — we’ll be rich in no time at all. What do you say?” It was obvious that their conversation was a continuation of discussions they had been having for several months…
