THEIR OWN PRAYER A
Russian bishop was making a visitation of his diocese. In that diocese was a forgotten island to which no one ever went. But when the bishop heard that three hermits dwelt there, he felt obliged to go see them – after all, they were under his care. Arriving at the island, he found three old men who kept repeating, “Three are thee and three are we have mercy on us.” That was the only prayer they knew. “Are you hermits?” the bishop asked. “We don’t know what that means,” they replied. “We just came here to praise God by remembering that he is three and we are three.” Now the bishop was a little worried at this, and he set about teaching them the Lord’s Prayer.
