For many years, sociologists and others have been commenting on “America’s love affair with the automobile.” Recently, a man named George fell in love with a new car, bought it, and proceeded to pamper it as one would pamper a newborn baby. A bit of dirt on the hood, or a little dust on the dashboard, or a tiny squeak from the brakes would receive his immediate attention. That car was the love of his life, no doubt about it! Then, one morning his wife drove him to his office and, on the way home, she was involved in a “fender-bender.” The right front fender of the love of George’s life looked like an accordion.
