“. . . and many will rejoice at His birth” (Luke 1:14).

A newspaper editor named Samuel Bowles was recognized by his colleagues as a careful man who rarely made a mistake. There was one occasion, however, when, as the editor of the “Springfield Republican” newspaper, Bowles mistakenly ran a story of the death of a prominent citizen who was very much alive. When he read the account of his own death, the man rushed to the editor ’s office to protest. “I’m sorry,” said Editor Bowles, “but when the ‘Springfield Republican’ says you’re dead, you are dead–until your name appears in tomorrow’s birth notices.”
