If you saw the film “Amadeus,” perhaps you remember the scene in which the brilliant young composer, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, introduces some new music to an audience which includes his patron, Emperor Joseph. The new Work features several musical innovations that seem to startle Mozart’s listeners. They begin to whisper to the Emperor, “The music has too many notes.” And when the performance ends the Emperor himself says to Mozart, “That’s it. Too many notes! The music has too many notes!” And there was an element of truth in that criticism. Mozart had created melodic lines that were far more complex than anything that had come before.
