Author/Clergyman Frederick B. Speakman describes the following scene from a vacation day at the New Jersey Shore:
It was late afternoon and the people were streaming from the beach back to their cottages. They actually were hurrying back to their temporary vacation homes in order to change their clothes and hurry to something else. (This business of going away for a rest can be very exhausting).
As the early evening scene unfolded, down the block from where I was staying an astonishing number of people were crowding onto a wide front porch — a cocktail party. As the party progressed and darkness began to fall, the crescendo of noise and strident laughter kept rising — a sure sign that the party was on the verge of being a great “success.” Then the party-goers began singing.
