God is like a mother . . .
In ancient Israel the making of clothes was women’s work. It is interesting to note in the story of creation (Genesis 3:21) God is shown making clothes for Adam and Eve, even dressing them as a mother dresses her children.
In the book of Isaiah we receive this assurance from God: “Like a son comforted by his mother, I will comfort you” (Isaiah 66:13).
“O Jerusalem, Jerusalem,” Jesus says in Matthew’s Gospel, “how often would I have gathered your children together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings.”
God is like a mother when She nurtures us, cares for us, dresses us, gathers us under
Her wings and comforts us!
