“As the Father sent Me, so I am sending you” (John 20:21).
The great French cleric, “Abbe Pierre,” known throughout the world for his tremendous life of service to others, one day was called upon to help a homeless family. He discovered that circumstances had forced them to live out in the open field in a crude shelter. Two of the children in the family already had died and a third was seriously ill. Abbe Pierre recalled the experience in these words:
When I became aware of the situation, I went out in the field to see that family. And when
I looked into the mother’s eyes, I suddenly realized the terrible truth that the Christian
thing to do was to say to that poor woman “Come on, get your things, pick up your child and come along with your husband and sleep in my room. I’ll take your place in the tent and tomorrow we’ll find some way of solving this.”
