A wise old man of business once said, “Competition brings out the best in products and the worst in people.” And for us, the trouble is if we are a competitive people, as long as there is one person in the whole world more powerful, or richer, or more clever than we are, that person is our rival — that person is our enemy.
Far worse, pride causes enmity not only between man and man, but also between man and God. In God, you come face-to-face with something which in every respect is infinitely superior to you. And unless you accept this reality, and thereby know yourself as infinitely inferior by comparison, you do not experience God’s Presence at all. As long as you are proud, you cannot know God. The proud person is always looking down on things and people. And, of course, as long as you are looking down, you cannot see something that is above you.
