A youngster asked his mother to take him to see a certain movie. “I don’t think you’ll enjoy it,” Mom replied. “The jokes will be over your head.” To which the lad replied, “That’s okay Mom, we can sit in the balcony.”
Reading today’s Gospel Lesson, I felt a little like that Mom: I didn’t think we would enjoy it. And even if we had a balcony, I could easily imagine that the Lesson would still go over our heads. Actually, it’s everybody’s problem. When we hear Jesus telling us that “This time has come” for us to repent and believe in the Good News with such fervor that it will radically change our way of living, we tend to turn a deaf ear. As if to say, self-righteously, “Why change? I’m perfectly fine just as I am.”
