One Sunday morning a New York City Pastor preached a sermon entitled, “The Tenacity of a Bulldog.” In the crowded Church that day was an executive of the Mack Truck Company who, as was his custom, was wearing a pin on his lapel which depicted the Mack Truck logos: a ferocious-looking bulldog. Later, during the “coffee klatch” in the Church basement, he was talking with a small group which included the preacher. Noticing the pin, someone in the group asked the Mack Truck executive, “What does the bulldog signify?” With a twinkle in his eye, the man replied, “It signifies the tenacity with which I hold on to Jesus Christ.” Hearing this, the pastor interrupted: “Wrong! It is a wonderful symbol, but your theology is bad. It shouldn’t signify the tenacity with which you hold on to Jesus Christ. Rather, it should signify the tenacity with which Jesus Christ holds on to you!”
Thanks be to the God who continues to hold on to…
