According to legend, there once were two very perplexing mysteries over which the wisest men in the land had scratched their heads and stroked their beards in vain for many years. The mysteries were, 1) Whenever anyone wanted to find a lead pencil, he couldn’t and, 2) Whenever anyone wanted to sharpen a lead pencil, the sharpener was sure to be filled with pencil shavings. It was a most annoying state of affairs, and after much public agitation a committee of distinguished philosophers was appointed by the government to conduct an investigation and, above all, to formulate a suitable explanation of the outrage.
