Do you remember the story of Pinocchio? Whenever he told a lie his nose got longer. But Balzac wrote a better story. It is about a man who, every time he did something that was at odds with his true self — every time he yielded to the devil’s voice — he shrank a little. He shrivelled. He became smaller and smaller and smaller — more and more diminished by falseness.
Isn’t that a picture of how we look many times — especially to ourselves. Outwardly we may project a giant image, but inwardly we are all shrivelled up — and we know it. We have lost our way. We don’t know what we stand for. We don’t know what to believe anymore. We don’t know who or what to depend on anymore. We conform to any principle that comes our way. We join the ranks of those who believe that the easiest way to get rid of temptation is to give in to…
