The greatest moment of your life occurs when, from the innermost depth of your being you say, in answer to Jesus’ question in today’s Gospel Lesson, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” This answer represents your discovery of the pearl of great price. It is the great treasure you have been groping for, longing for, searching for. It is the fulfillment of your fondest, wildest hopes and dreams. It is the casting out of all your natural fears of mortality and immortality. It represents a whole new life-vision, of the kind described in an essay by M.P. Montague, entitled, “Twenty Minutes of Reality.” Montague was in a hospital, convalescing from surgery when he says, “I saw into reality, and there was the ecstasy which is always there, but which we are entitled to perceive only on rare and fleeting occasions. I had undergone a certain amount of physical pain, and had suffered for a short time the most acute mental depression…
