All through His life, Jesus described His own ministry primarily in terms of loving service to other persons — the Servant Leader. But His disciples never really understood this. When He fed them in the wilderness with the loaves and the fishes and they tried to make Him their king, He refused — and they did not understand. When He rode the little donkey into Jerusalem, they welcomed Him as their king, but He certainly didn’t act like a king — and they did not understand. He knelt on the floor and washed their dusty feet, in what was so obviously an enactment of the servant’s role and they did not understand. Finally, on the Cross, Jesus demonstrated His willingness to suffer, even to die for others — and they did not understand. As the Apostle John expressed it, He was “The real Light which gives light to every man … to His own He came, yet His own did not accept Him” (Jn. 1:9,11).…
