If you have been to the Holy Land you probably discovered that “Jacob’s Well” is one of the few places in Israel today where you can be sure you are standing in the exact place that Jesus stood.
Today’s Gospel Lesson is the familiar story of the conversation at Jacob’s Well between Jesus and a Samaritan woman. The conversation strongly suggests that the Samaritan woman would have been very much at home in our modern society. She reminds us of the woman who was giving advice on how to cope in today’s world. “Look at me,” she said. “I’ve had four husbands. First I married a millionaire, then an actor. My third husband was a preacher and now I’m married to a mortician: One for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go.”
