One of the popular “inspirational” authors of our time 1 maintains that two “spirations” are essential “for every worth-while achievement of any kind.” In his words …

If either is missing, the enterprise is doomed to failure, and if you have not been making your life as successful as you would like, you must go to work and discover which of them has been overlooked.

What are the two “spirations”? Perhaps you’ve already guessed. They are “inspiration” and “perspiration.” And if either is missing in your endeavor to develop a good, upright effective Christian lifestyle, that enterprise is doomed to failure.

The crowded “Self-Help” book shelves notwithstanding, the key to your leading the good life is “God’s Help.” As the ancient Psalmist put it,

If Yahweh does not build the house,
in vain the masons toil.
If Yahweh does not guard the city,
in vain the sentries watch.
